Santa Lucia 2003 - Örnsköldsvik Allehanda et Lions Örnsköldsvik Sweden
Santa Lucia came from Sicilia with some swedish soldiers a long time ago. At this time, people were thinking that the longest and darkest night was the Santa Lucia night, and that Santa Lucia brought the sun back. (Hållänget school) Now, Santa Lucia comes with a candle crown on her head and sings the Santa Lucia's song. She brings with her pepperkaka and safran cake (Luciakatte).
The ceremony of Sankta Lucia starts with a cortege in the city. It is followed by songs in one of the churches.
Among other, the Santa Lucia song :
Natten går tunga fjät runt gård och stuva.
Kring jord som sol förlät, skuggorna ruva.
Då i vårt mörka hus, stiger med tända ljus,
Sankta Lucia, Sankta Lucia.
Natten var stor och stum. Nu hör, det svingar,
i alla tysta rum, sus som av vingar.
Se på vår tröskel står vitkläd, med ljus i hår,
Sankta Lucia, Sankta Lucia.
Mörkret skall flykta snart ur jordens dalar.
Så hon ett underbart ord till oss talar.
Dagen skall åter gry, stiga ur rosig sky,
Sankta Lucia, Sankta Lucia.
In english:
Nightly, go heavy hearts
Round farm and steading
On earth, where sun departs,
shadows are spreading.
Then on our darkest night,
Comes with her shining light
Sankta Lucia! Sankta Lucia!
Then on our darkest night,
Comes with her shining light
Sankta Lucia, Sankta Lucia.
Night-darkling, huge and still.
Hark, something's stirring!
In all our silent rooms,
Wingbeats are whisp'ring!
Stands on our threshold there,
White clad, lights in her hair,
Sankta Lucia! Sankta Lucia!
Stands on our threshold there,
White clad, lights in her hair,
Sankta Lucia! Sankta Lucia!
Darkness shall fly away
Through earthly portals.
She brings such wonderful
words to us mortals!
Daylight, again renewed,
will rise, all rosy-hued!
Sankta Lucia! Sankta Lucia!
Daylight, again renewed,
will rise, all rosy-hued.
Sankta Lucia! Sankta Lucia!

2004/11/27 - Donna - West Jordan City - United States - I think it is marvelous that Swedes around the world still celebrate Santa Lucia. Here in Utah we have a Santa Lucia fest and it was fun to see that this website included her song. Thanks so much!
2005/04/15 - laho - agadir - maroc - ça a l'air d1 festival marocain berbere, genre ahwach etc - la photo n'es pas trop clair et le commentaire est trop long pour qu'il sois lu en entier

Photo of the week
Sweden
The snow is here. In a few weeks, it has been quite a lot of snow. The small shortcuts where it was still possible to go are too snowy now.
